The Roots of our Prison Alpha Course

On February 20th 2006 the Alpha Course came to Mission Institution and currently runs 2 times per year in the Mission Institution Chapel, facilitated by volunteers from the community along with inmate chapel workers. The format of it was very simple: we ate dinner, watched the Alpha Course video, and discussed it afterwards. Although there was nothing wrong with that it just seemed to need a bit more and after facilitating the program for 3 years we clearly saw a need to do something. Fellowship with God doesn’t need to be so repetitive, changes and upgrading can sometimes be necessary. If God is truly our friend then we should introduce Him in a way that would get people excited and be able to relate to. We cried out to the LORD for a revival in this program. He heard our cries!

Resource Building Begins

He inspired us to do some research on today’s Christian worship music and entertainment realm. With the very limited access that we have in prison, we began to do the work with the assistance of the chaplains and volunteers. Taking collections from inmates, the help of chaplains, and the support of volunteers, we started to build a DVD library. This library is now full of the most updated worship/Christian music videos, testimonies, and documentary films.

Result: A Creative New Alpha Mix

The end result of all this is an Alpha Course that has spice, flair, and excitement that not only grabs the participants from old to young, but also shows them that Christianity can be appealing no matter what their taste or cultural backgrounds. This is the beginning of Alpha Remixed. The Alpha Course is good, now lets all run a course that would honor God and give Him our best as we spice it up!

Alpha Remixed is Growing

The Alpha Course Remixed is already spreading beyond the walls of this prison. Other prisons and local churches in the community are seeing what we see.  At present Mission Institution, Surrey Pre-trail, Ferndale Institution, also do the program and Fraser Valley Institution and Matsqui Institution and others, are considering this new approach to running Alpha. In addition, churches in the community are also running Alpha Remixed!

scroll-150Prisoner confesses Jesus to entire jail then tells them that Alpha played a big part of the growth process. Virtually every jail has an inmate newspaper where prisoners are allowed to express their thoughts and opinions. Here in Mission we have THE MISSION INSIDER and up to 270 inmates have access to this paper at any given time. Alan is the editor of this newspaper and he writes in a recent edition the following about his Christian walk on the way back to God.

I’m always inspired by people who “act” — to put into practice the words of the Gospel. Good on the guys from Mission…and good luck with the program. (Great website too).

There is so much talent and hidden jewels of God’s handiwork within the barriers of prison. For the sake of connection and relationship, Alpha Remixed bridges certain obstables, excaliming the unvarished gospel and hope of Christ to a strata of people climatized to hopelessness. I find it incredibly exciting to hear testimony of our Lord using this platform to reach such a diverse group of men. In my own life, I’ve certainly laughed, cried, pondered, and prayed along with the faciliating Alpha videos and participants. This has awakened my walk through the prison system and enriched my communion with fellow inmates, volunteers, and the King of the universe. Now in the community, I glean upon the marvelous work being done within the prison, and am filled with an abundance of thanksgiving. If God is for us (and He is) who can be against us?

Alpha was not quite enough so you asked God for more. What a compelling website! The treasures hidden behind prison walls are incredible. I am touched and proud of the men of Mission. You do have a “mission”. Thank you. LOVE is always the answer.

  • In my blog earlier this Summer, I mentioned that the fellows at Mission Institution had committed to raising funds for BC Children’s Hospital at their 6th annual Tennis fundraising tournament. I really didn’t know what to expect out of this event but I enthusiastically signed myself up even though I’ve never really played the game other than a few uninspired attempts while I was growing up. The bottom line is I don’t even own a tennis racket and haven’t played the game in years.

The event took place Saturday, August 27th and wow, was I ever impressed with the quality of play from the inmates and other volunteers that participated (needless to say, this tennis newbie got smoked in his first two matches – I was clearly outmatched and out of my league). Even more impressive was the amount of energy everyone brought and the overall feel-good vibe of the day. There was an overwhelming sense that we were all stepping up to something important, that our efforts were for the greater good and that we were about to raise the bar on an event that over the years has become a statement of the goodwill that can be generated even from within the walls of a federal penitentiary.

Last year this event raised a little over $3000 for various worthy charities and this year that number was blown away with the final count coming in at over $4500!! Approx $1500 of these funds will be directed towards the BC Children’s Hospital in honour of the Summits of Hope Kilimanjaro trek. The other designated charities are: World Vision (continuation of child sponsorship); Chalice Canada (continuation of child sponsorship); Salvation Army (2 bursaries for local summer camp); and Canadian Save the Children Well Water/African Aid.

Gentlemen, SOH & BCCH are so grateful for your support. Thank you, I will be back to visit soon with prayer flags for you to fill in so that we can bring them with us to Kilimanjaro and raise your intentions to God from the top of Africa!!

i admire the work you put into this site and the quality of the website.

i enjoy most the Catholic Worship, the prayers, the worship, the music and the atmosphere of caring that prevades the service. i enjoy meeting the men and hearing their wonderful stories and sharing of their spirituality. i leave feeling i have been given more than i bring as a volunteer. God continue to bless you all.
